Dear Prof. Aref,

I had no idea. I'm very sorry for your loss--I'm sure I couldn't say
anything else that hasn't already been said a thousand times this week.

Regards,
Larry

Dear All,

My name is Hassan Aref. I am a professor of engineering science and
mechanics at Virginia Tech. Yes, that school. My office is in Norris Hall.
Yes, that building. Liviu Librescu's office was next door to mine. Kevin
Granata's was around the corner and down the hall. It has been the week
from Hell here. Frankly, we're fresh out of words and fresh out of tears,
although we start teaching on Monday and the tears have a way of welling up
when one leasts expects them.

I was personally very fortunate. I had decided to work at home Monday
morning and then to go in for an exam at 1. Then the news unfolded. My
colleagues, the staff, and many students witnessed horrific things that day,
things that will be with them forever. They allowed us in the building on
Thursday (first and third floor office residents only) under police escort.
I didn't have the guts to go. Some of my colleagues who did go (they almost
had to in some cases since they had left essential things behind), said it
was very trying.

We continue to believe that the accumulation of human knowledge is one of
the noblest things we do on this little planet of ours. We continue to
believe that education will make a better world. That is part of why I am
interested in Citizendium. I also believe that the current generations are
in a unique situation historically and epistemologically, essentially in the
same situation relative to the electronic document as some earlier
generations were relative to the printed document. That aspect too is
exciting.

My main area of expertise is fluid mechanics and its attendant physics,
applied mathematics, and numerous applications in engineering, meteorology,
astronomy, biology and so on. "Everything flows," said Heraclitus, and so
by extension the study of flow would seem to be somewhat important! At a
minimum, I hope to coerce some of my professional peers into contributing
high quality articles in my general domains of expertise (including those
where I may only know enough to be dangerous).
