Supten has told me that Regina has nominated me for the Chair, and I want to
express my appreciation. Let me first answer the formal questions:
1. If I become Chair, I have time for the work. If this should change,
I will take inform the Council and ask for replacement.
2. I fully support the Statement of Fundamental Principles. That being
said, I must point out that they are Principles, and there will be times
when I have to use my best judgment, seek consultation, and follow my
conscience in specific interpretations.
It is appropriate that I state my belief on the role of the Editorial
Council - and, again, I believe this is not completely clear and needs
collaborative development. Specifically, I understand the principal
definition of the Council role is defined in CZ: Editorial Policy/Editorial
Council. It has been suggested that Resolution 0001 limits it from any
activities that are not specifically structured as Resolutions, but I do not
believe this is a clear interpretation. I see the Editorial Council, perhaps
by appointing task forces, acting in matters of community guidance and
consensus formation that might not always be in the structure of a
Resolution. Again, the process of such interpretation and operations must be
transparent and community-based.
Please feel free to contact me should you need additional background
information; my user page isn't fully up to date on contributions. I am, I
hope, days away from signing some contracts for a regular article series in
marine (i.e., ship and boat) electronics and computing, so I might need to
recuse myself if ever we should face a crucial editorial policy decision
regarding the instrumentation of commercial fishing boats. :-)

Subject: [Cz-editcouncil] Call for the Nomination of the Chair!
Dear Council members,
As per rules:
http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Editorial_Council_Resolution_0007#V._Selec
tion_of_the_Editorial_Council_Chair.
"A new Chair should be selected each year from among the members who arrived
the previous year, that is, from among those Council members who have been
on the Council for one year."
So, the eligible candidates for April 2009 - March 2010 can be only either

Therefore, the Chair has to be s/elected from these 6+11=17 members only,
provided they fulfill the other criteria and are willing to spare their time
and efforts.
Nominations are now in order for the office of Chair. Please submit
nominations, either of yourself or of another person, privately to me, not
to this list. Be sure to check the "to" line in your mail.
Nominations will be closed in exactly one week i.e., Wednesday March 04,
2009 04:30 hrs. UTC.
The duties of the Chair, a one-year position, are spelled out here:
http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Editorial_Council_Rules_of_Procedure
While I hope the Editorial Council will be more active in 2009-10 than it
has been in the previous year, I have found that my chair-specific duties,
beyond my participation in the Council itself, did not occupy more than a
few minutes every week.
The person who is elected to Chair should be both committed to thsi project
and have adequate time, as the rules for the selection of the Chair state:
http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Editorial_Council_Resolution_0007#V._Selec
tion_of_the_Editorial_Council_Chair.
Unless you
1. can attest in good conscience [in an e-mail to me] that you have
adequate time to execute the duties of Chair, and
2. continue to support fully the fundamental policies of the Citizendium
community.
you aren't eligible.
With warmest regards
Supten
