Larry,
This is a topic that also interests me very much, but I am biased towards phonics instruction.
I have several articles about beginning reading instruction on my website:

I could do an in-depth review and summary of the Flesch classic, WHY JOHNNY CAN'T READ, but not before May.
I'll be away from home for most of April. Flesch describes the evolution of American reading instruction in detail.
