The game's protagonist, Solid Snake, is called in to stop the terrorists using the Government's weapon which is housed there, as well as rescuing two hostages. The weapon is Metal Gear - a nuclear-equipped walking tank.

Snake tries in vain to rescue the two men, who are meant to have keys to stop Metal Gear, but both seem to die of heart-attacks. Snake finds out the way to deactivate Metal Gear is to use cards given to him by Baker (before he died) and to insert them into the computers next to Metal Gear itself. However, Snake was tricked. Ocelot, an expert in torture, had accidentally killed the DARPA chief whilst trying to force out information regarding how to activate Metal Gear, thus they didn't t receive the "key", so they could not start Metal Gear. Decoy Octopus, a master of disguise, pretended to be the DARPA chief when Snake arrived, and told him how to deactivate Metal Gear, when in fact, because it was not yet active: inserting the cards as he suggested would activate it.
Snake receives support via CODEC from Colonel Campbell, who gives Snake his orders, and Mei Ling, who records the mission data i.e. saves the game. Snake's orders are to rescue the two hostages held there: Donald Anderson, a DARPA chief, and President Baker of ArmsTech, as well as stopping the terrorists launching a nuclear strike with Metal Gear.

Naomi, a woman who assists Snake via CODEC, reveals to Snake that he is carrying a virus called FOXDIE, deesigned to kill people with certain genetic sequences. Unfortunately for Solid Snake, Liquid Snake tells him that the two of them are clones of the legendary soldier Big Boss, as are all of the Next-Generation Forces, meaning that Snake has been killing his "brothers". Therefore, Solid Snake has the same DNA as the Next-Gen forces and is vulnerable to the virus that he is carrying.
Snake first finds Anderson, who tells him that both he and President Baker have "keys", which can be used to deactvate Metal Gear. He tells Snake that he told the terrorists his key under torture. However, he dies, with Snake believing that he had had a heart attack. Meryl Silverburgh, a woman in the next cell, eavesdrops on their conversation and helps Snake fight off the guards who soon arrive.

Having been tricked, Snake activates Metal Gear, controlled by Liquid Snake, but manages to destroy it using his STINGER missile launcher. Afterwards, Snake receives a CODEC transmission from the Government, saying that a nuclear strike is being planned to hide all evidence of the event as well as everyone who knows about it. Everyone tries to escape from the compund and Liquid eventually dies from FOXDIE, after a car chase. At the end, Snake does not now how long he has to live.
Snake finds the next hostage - President Baker of ArmsTech. Revolver Ocelot soon arrives, and has a fight with Snake, from which Snake emerges victorious. A cyborg ninja appears, who cuts of Ocelot's arm with his sword. Both the ninja and Ocelot leave and President Baker says to Snake that he had to resist the psychic powers of Psycho Mantis to stop the terrorists learning about his key, but then he was unable to withstand physical torture, and eventually gave away his key. He tells Snake that there is a way to deactivate Metal Gear once it has been started - he must collect 3 cards and insert them into computer terminals next to Metal Gear itself. Baker gives him one of the cards, but says that he does not know the location of the other two. Just as the DARPA chief did, President Baker dies of an apparent heart-attack.

There are two possible endings. If Snake submits to torture earlier in the game, Meryl dies and Snake escapes with Otacon. If Snake survives the torture, Otacon's fate is unknown and Snake escapes with Meryl.
Meryl and Snake decide to meet, provided that Snake finds Hal Emmerich, also known as Otacon, who helped design Metal Gear, but didn't know that it would be used for nuclear attacks. Whilst searching for him, Snake encounters one of the terrorists' leaders - Vulcan Raven, who fights Snake in a tank.  Snake again wins, and finds Otacon, only to be ambushed by the ninja. Snake discovers the ninja's true identity: Gray Fox, a man whom Snake had fought with in the original Metal Gear game. The two engage is a hand-to-hand fight, which Snake wins. The ninja leaves, and Snake speaks to Otacon, who is upset after he found out what Metal Gear had been nuclear-equipped.

Snake and Meryl meet up, only to be fought by Psycho Mantis, a man with psychic powers, as his name suggests. He controls Meryl, making her say that she will shoot herself unless Snake gives in. Snake knocks her out, and fights Psycho Mantis, one of the Next-Generation Special Forces, eventually winning. Meryl and Snake leave and move on, only for Meryl to be shot by Sniper Wolf, another one of the terrorists. Snake is forced to run right back through the compound to find a sniper rifle, and returns. He beats Wolf, but then discovers that Meryl had been taken away. Soon, Snake himself is captured.

Whilst in captivity, Liquid reveals to him that the two of them are twin brothers, identical on the genetic level. Ocelot tortures Snake, saying that if he gives in to the pain, Meryl will be killed. After the torture session is over, Snake is imprisoned in a cell, but manages to escape by hiding under his bed. The guard runs in and he uses the time when the door is open to escape.

Snake tries to find Metal Gear, but he is followed by Liquid, who is in a Hind helicopter. Snake manages to take it down using a STINGER missile launcher. Shortly after this battle, Snake is ambushed by Wolf again, but Snake manages to win, despite finding visibility difficult. Otacon, because he loved her for caring for the animals, is upset that she is dead, but continues to help Snake.

Snake moves through yet more of the facility, and is forced to fight Raven again, and manages to win using C4 and Claymore mines to inflict damage. After the battle, Raven, before dying, reveals to Snake that the DARPA chief was really Decoy Octopus in disguise. Shortly after the battle, Master, a man who is helping Snake by CODEC, tells Snake that Naomi has given Snake the FoxDie virus, which is designed to kill people with certain genetic sequences. It was the virus which killed Decoy Octopus and President Baker. Naomi reveals that she was trying to kill Snake, but, after learning about his past during the mission, no longer wants to kill him. She also tells him that she was adopted, and was like a sister to Gray Fox.

Snake inserts the card into the machine, learning from Otacon that there are not 3 cards: the card he has changes shape at different temperatures. He inserts the card in its three different shapes into the computer, but, as described earlier, it causes Metal Gear to be activated. Master Miller then revieals that he is in fact Liquid Snake. Liquid then explains to Snake that the two of them are clones of the legendary soldier Big Boss. The Government project was named "Les Enfants Terribles". Solid Snake was given Big Boss' dominant genes, and Liquid Snake was given his weaker, recessive genes.

Liquid enters Metal Gear. Snake manages to destroy part of it. Gray Fox appears, who damages it more, but dies in the process. Snake, continues to fight, and destroys REX. However, Liquid survives. Snake battles him on top of REX, and emerges victorious. Snake rescues Meryl, but, depending on whether or not Snake survived the torture earlier in the game, she may be alive or dead. If she is alive, Snake leaves with her. If she is dead, Snake leaves with Otacon.

A high member of the Government contacts Snake via CODEC, informing him that they are planning to destroy the nuclear disposal facility, to hide all evidence of what happened. Snake has to escape before the planes arrive. He and Meryl/Otacon go to find a car, and end up chasing Liquid, who is in another card. They crash, and Liquid is about to shoot Snake, but then he dies from a "heart attack" - the FoxDie virus.

Metal Gear Solid is a stealth-based third-person shooter released for the Sony PlayStation video game console on February 26, 1999. It was published by Konami, and directed by Hideo Kojima. [1].

Plot

On a fictional off-shore island close to Alaska, named Shadow Moses, a nuclear disposal site is taken over by Next-Generation Special Forces, led by Liquid Snake and Revolver Ocelot. The game's protagonist, Solid Snake, is called in to stop the terrorists using the Government's weapon which is housed there, as well as rescuing two hostages. The weapon is Metal Gear - a nuclear-equipped walking tank.

Remakes

Metal Gear Solid: Integral / Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions

Integral was a release of Metal Gear Solid for the PC. The game introduced a "Very Easy" difficulty setting for the main game as well as a photography mode, but the most notable improvement was the inclusion of a disc containing 300 VR missions [2]. Although it was only released on the PC in Japan, it was transferred to PlayStation as an expansion pack for the original game in the US and UK. In the US, it was named Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions [3] and it in UK, it was named Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions [4].

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes

Twin Snakes is a remake of the original game, but for GameCube featuring much improved graphics. Snake was also given new abilities, which he had in Metal Gear Solid 2, including being able to hang from ledges and shooting from first person view. The cutscenes and audio were re-written in many places[5].
