Forming the northwestern corner of Vietnam, Lai Chau Province has international borders with Laos to the south and China to the northwest. Lao Cai Province is on its northern side and Son La Province on its east.

Its capital was Lai Chau City, but was changed, for political significance, to Dien Bien Phu in 1993.
