==Project Description==

The instructors decided to utilize [[CZ:Eduzendium|Eduzendium]] as a way of providing students an opportunity to practice for a lifetime of quickly researching new technologies, plus exploring the ramifications of being out on the web (i.e., not anonymous). Students will collaborate in small groups (2-4 students) to write an article in Citizendium on an "emerging technology" topic (to be pre-approved by the instructors).  Groups will also present their results to the class at the end of the course. Training will be provided on using the Penn library, which includes "deep web" references such as academic journals, patent searches, and business surveys.

TO STUDENTS: feel free to customize your user pages any way you wish.  Until the course ends, I suggest that you retain a pointer on your user page to '''this course page''' so other authors will know that you are involved with Eduzendium.

A portion of your course grade will be obtained by participating as an author throughout the [[CZ:Computers_Workgroup]].  Below is a list of articles that students will be working on during the Summer II 2010 semester (July and early August). These articles will be closed to editing by other citizens until after the conclusion of the course, though we'd appreciate hearing any comments or suggestions you might have on their respective talk pages.

==The course mechanics==
[[CZ:Eduzendium|Eduzendium]] courses need a number of help pages in order to function properly within the ''Citizendium''.
<!--Start of nested section: -->{{#ifexist:CZ:{{PAGENAME}}/Metadata_template|This course homepage and all its standard subpages have been set up with the standard names in their standard location: [[CZ:{{PAGENAMEE}}/Template_article|A template article to prefill the students's pages with course-specific formatting and content]], a [[CZ:{{PAGENAME}}/Metadata_template|template]] for the [[CZ:Metadata#Metadata|metadata]] of your course's article, and a [[CZ:{{PAGENAME}}/EZnotice|note]] informing other [[CZ:Citizen|Citizen]]s whether they are allowed to edit your course's pages or not. Please modify these pages as you see fit. If you are done, you can delete the whole section ''The course mechanics'' from your course homepage.
|The following instructions will guide you through the process of creating these pages. Pay special attention to bolded information just above the edit window. ==What We'll Be Working On==
Students may wish to add a link to this course on your user page using this code:

For each of the articles you plan to have your students work on, please add a line of the form <nowiki>{{r_EZ|Title of your course's article 1}}</nowiki>, which will display as
<nowiki>
{{r_EZ|Title of your course's article 1}}
    [[CZ:Special_Topics_2010|Emerging Technologies 2010]]
{{r_EZ|Title of your course's article 2}}
</nowiki>
{{r_EZ|Title of your course's article 3}}
{{r_EZ|Title of your course's article 4}}
etc.

Once the articles have been created, they will be listed here in the following formatting:

Articles under development

There are the top-level articles under development for this course (more to be added):

  • Stub Collaborative filtering [r]: The use of software algorithms for narrowing down a large set of choices by using collaboration among multiple agents, viewpoints, and data sources. [e]
    (Group 2)
  • Stub Distributed version control [r]: Newer revision control systems for some of the most important open source projects (e.g., the Linux kernel, Qt, Ruby on Rails). [e]
    (Group 5)
  • Stub HTML5 [r]: HTML5 is the next generation hypertext markup language standard published by the World Wide Web Consortium to provide new ways of presenting content on the World Wide Web that include transition effects, animation, video, and more. [e]
    (Group 4)
  • Developing Article Java concurrency package [r]: A library supporting threading and parallel programming in the Java programming language. [e]
    (Group 1)
  • Developing Article Multi-touch_interface [r]: Set of interaction techniques which allow computer or mobile users to control graphical user interface with more than one finger at either application or system level. [e]
    (Group 6)
  • Developing Article NoSQL [r]: A number of non-relational distributed database architectures, usually that store data as key-value pairs. [e]
    (Group 8)
  • Developing Article Recommendation system [r]: A software program which attempts to narrow down selections for users based on their expressed preferences, past behavior, or other data which can be mined about the user. [e]
    (Group 2)
  • Developing Article Semantic web [r]: Tim Berners-Lee's concept of a "web of knowledge", whereby web-based document contents would be annotated and classified so that computers can parse the classifications and provide search results based on the semantic information (what the content means), rather than simply on matching of text strings. [e]
    (Group 9)
  • Stub Virtual server [r]: Instances of server software hosted simultaneously on a single computer along with other instances of the same, or different, server operating systems. [e]
    (Group 3)
