In the Central Highlands of Vietnam is Gia Lai Province, also Gia Lam, whose capital is Pleiku. Plei Me, which was near the first engagement in the Battle of the Ia Drang, is in the province. Another of its towns is An Khe, where the 173rd Airborne Brigade was based from 1968 until it left Vietnam.
Its northern neighbor is Kontum Province; Dac Lac Province on the south; and Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces on the east. Cambodia forms the eastern boundary.
