Did not see how to factor this in here (perhaps as a footnbote?) but in NMR spectra, peaks that involve only C and H are often referred to as "hydrocarbon peaks", irrespective of whether the molecule as a whole contains other types of atoms. --Daniel Mietchen 09:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC) | Did not see how to factor this in here (perhaps as a footnbote?) but in NMR spectra, peaks that involve only C and H are often referred to as "hydrocarbon peaks", irrespective of whether the molecule as a whole contains other types of atoms. --Daniel Mietchen 09:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

At the request of Milton Beychok, I've merged Hydrocarbons with Alkane. This merged the histories of both articles so all participation is visible for both articles. I then cut and pasted the Alkane info to the bottom of this page, where it probably needs to be blended to the rest of the artcle. I will now delete teh Alkane metadata page. There were no subpages in either article at the time to worry about. If there are any questions, or if something is missing, just let me know and I will see what I can do. [[User:D. Matt Innis|D. :I agree and have commented on your Talk page. I also created the very brief stub Aromatic hydrocarbons (part of one sentence) so that you could then write the article. Have fun writing it! Milton Beychok 16:15, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
:Yes, I agree there should be a separate article. I propose an article called Aromatic compound or Aromatic compounds with Aromatic and Aromaticity as Redirects to it. This article would cover aromatic theory in general, Huckel's rule, resonance structures and various chemical structure designations for them, anti-aromatic compounds, and stuff like that. Various hydrocarbon, heterocycle, (maybe ionic ring), and polyaromatic ring examples would be mentioned in this article. Aromatic hydrocarbons, for which there is already an article, are a subset of aromatic compounds. Nathaniel Gunby has not written up aromatic theory, and he has not been active in CZ since 2010. I may have something I wrote on my old computer which can someday be converted into an Aromatic compounds article. Henry A. Padleckas 05:35, 29 November 2012 (UTC) |

Rationale for all the revisions and expansions I made today (March 22, 2009)
In the course of the 19 CZ articles I have written about petroleum refining processes and natural gas processes as well as many of the 54 CZ articles I have written on various chemical engineering subjects, I probably used the word hydrocarbons a few hundred times or more. In view of that, I thought that this article deserved to be expanded and revised so as to provide a more informative article for linking to.
I realize that a really complete discussion of hydrocarbons would probably require a textook of 400-500 pages. I am neither competent to do that, nor do I have the time to do more than I did today. I think the article now covers the subject of hydrocarbons adequately enough so that one can link to it from other articles in most cases.
If anyone feels that I have erred in some of my revisions and expansions, feel free to correct any such errors. And if anyone feels that more expansion is still required, again feel free to expand the article further. I only suggest that the article not be turned into a chemistry textbook and that the usage of highly advanced chemistry details be avoided.
Perhaps, some CZ authors will someday create separate, much more detailed articles for the subjects discussed in each of the sections of this current article and I believe such separate articles are sorely needed. Milton Beychok 02:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Hydrocarbon peak in NMR spectroscopy
Did not see how to factor this in here (perhaps as a footnbote?) but in NMR spectra, peaks that involve only C and H are often referred to as "hydrocarbon peaks", irrespective of whether the molecule as a whole contains other types of atoms. --Daniel Mietchen 09:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Merged Alkane
At the request of Milton Beychok, I've merged Hydrocarbons with Alkane. This merged the histories of both articles so all participation is visible for both articles. I then cut and pasted the Alkane info to the bottom of this page, where it probably needs to be blended to the rest of the artcle. I will now delete teh Alkane metadata page. There were no subpages in either article at the time to worry about. If there are any questions, or if something is missing, just let me know and I will see what I can do. D. - That "Alkane" section which was pasted into the bottom of this article was already covered in the "Linear saturated hydrocarbons" section, so I have deleted it. In fact, that was the main reason for the merger. Thanks a bunch for your help, Milton Beychok 17:43, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Homesickness
- snif* You realize that you are making me homesick for the olfactory memories of my childhood — in Northern New Jersey? Aromatics indeed. Howard C. Berkowitz 17:32, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- All smells aside, thanks for your cooperation in this, Howard. Milton Beychok 17:40, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Aliphatic
I note that this is one of the "wanted pages". Is it reasonable to rearrange the headers here so it could become a redirect? Howard C. Berkowitz 20:03, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- I expanded the introduction section to define aliphatic. Does that do it for you? Or do still think the section headers should be re-organized? Milton Beychok 21:13, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Aromatic
Does antyone else think that aromaticity deserves to be given a proper article, especially in view of aromatic heterocycles (furan, thiophene, etc)? If a more experienced user agrees, could they please set up a proper page (the last article I started (also my first) had formatting issues) and then drop me a line on my talk page? Cheers Nathaniel Gunby 11:22, 1 November 2010(UTC)

- Yes, I agree there should be a separate article.
