Gay liberation was a movement in the late 1960s and 1970s spanning a number of Western societies in support of rights for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people. The iconic moment for the gay liberation movement was the Stonewall riots in New York in 1969. The various movements and organizations started the move to get people to out themselves, and often tied gay liberation to other radical social goals including opposition to consumerism and in support of feminist aims.
