The reason there is a date for Bill Berry is that he quit the band in '07. For the rest, the dates are 1980, when the band formed, til the present. I figured that there's no reason to give durations for members who have been around from beginning til now, but instead just make a special note for the one member with a different duration. | |||

As stated in the article, they took the name form a neuroscientific term, for rapid eye movement, an indicator of when you're dreaming (which occurs in most mammals (including babies for I don't know how long before they're born), many/most birds & a few reptiles).
