A senior commander of the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War, Marshal Albert Kesselring commanded one of the two main German air fleets in the Battle of Britain. Subsequently, he became the German theater commander for the Italian theater of operations.
He had a significant role in the surrender of German forces in Italy to the Allies,[1] which may have contributed to leniency at his subsequent trial for war crimes. [2]
