== Jess, just finished a help article on how to archive user talk page ==

Please look at [[User:Milton Beychok/Sandbox]] where I have just finished a help page on how to archive subpages. I plan to upload it as [[CZ:Archiving user talk pages]] and you can then fit it into your new Help structure. I know that [[CZ:Talk Pages]] has a section devoted to the same subject ... but my stand-alone article is much more detailed and covers more aspects of the subject. I tried to write it so that newcomers could follow it step-by-step.

: It may be easier to move the page straight into the help system then going via a CZ page. If you could move it to [[Help:Index/Communication/Talk/Archiving]] that will put it straight in place. Also please add <nowiki>{{Help page|Talk Pages}}</nowiki> to the top of the page, and <nowiki>{{Back to help}}</nowiki> at the end of the page. Thanks for your help! --[[User:Chris Key|Chris Key]] 10:08, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

{unindent} If you read the PDF copyright file I sent it says any work done for the federal government is considered public domain. The author/photographer was taking photos for the US government therefore is considered a federal employee making the photo public domain attributed to the US government. The way I attributed it originally is correct. [[User:Mary Ash|Mary Ash]] 18:17, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

:: With regards to the John E. Mack photo, if you look at [http://en.citizendium.org/wiki?title=Image:Mack_harvardpressoffice.jpg&oldid=100697131 your original upload] you can see that you have put a URL as both the author and the copyright holder. There is no way that a URL took the photo or holds the copyright. As the photographer is unknown, we have now put this. We can assume that the copyright is held by the Harvard University Press Office. Therefore with the corrections now made this is correct. --[[User:Chris Key|Chris Key]] 18:25, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

:::I forgot to add if it says U.S. Navy photo you can betcha it's owned by the federal government. I do believe that's what the original photo upload cited. I'll read the rest of your comments later but I wanted to make sure CZ was informed of the correct attribution. What made me think of this is that I was thinking about my work at our local newspaper. Yes, I was given a byline for every article written, but the paper owned copyright as it was done as "work for hire". [[User:Mary Ash|Mary Ash]] 18:29, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

:::: Even if it is owned by the US government this does NOT mean that it is public domain. The copyright could have been transferred from the original photographer to the US government. Consider this, all of the other photos on that page do not say "US Navy photo by Joe Bloggs". This would suggest that this is a special case, and the author has to be attributed. "you can betcha" is not proof, and in order to claim public domain we need proof. --[[User:Chris Key|Chris Key]] 18:39, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

(undent)Anyway, like you I am no expert on copyright. If you wish to further dispute the copyright attribution of that (or any other image) please do so on the talk page of that image. If you wish to draw this to the attention of certain Citizens you are welcome to point them in the direction of that talk page, however it is not very helpful to have these discussions on user pages. This is especially the case when you try to hold the same discussion on three separate user pages as it creates a fragmented discussion. Creating a central point for discussion (the image talk page) and asking other users to read it is enough. Those who wish to follow the discussion can then follow it on their watchlist - there is no need to copy/paste sections of the discussion onto users talk pages. --[[User:Chris Key|Chris Key]] 18:44, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

I know that you are probably not an expert on the subject. However, I would very much appreciate your review of it and giving me any comments, additions, deletions, typo corrections,  or revisions you care to offer on my sandbox talk page. Chris, I just revised and re-uploaded [[:Image:Lightning over Oradea Romania 2.jpg]] so as to get the formatting into the current form with a credit line ... but it didn't work. Can you somehow revert my revision and go back to the the image format as it it was before I tried to fix it? I don't want to delete it because that might offend [[User:David Ellis|David Ellis]] who originally uploaded it from Commons.

: I'm not sure because I've never used the site either, but I think that when they log into their BeenVerified account there is a page marked 'Share' which they must fill in with an email address. This will send a link to that email address that can be viewed without logging in. Again, I'm not 100% sure on this as I haven't registered. the only way to know for sure is to try registering yourself and see how it works. You can start the process at https://www.beenverified.com/signup/new?p=citizendium

Jess, in about 30 minutes, I will be back to work with you on what we still need to do about our donation drive which I have already initiated in the main CZ Forums. [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 01:55, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

== Updating you on our donations drive ==

Jess, we have now had 5 donations and the total in our PayPal account is at $372.

* I have posted instructions on how to donate to the PayPal account in the "Governance" forum thread and the "Management and other non-content issues" forum thread.
* I deleted (into the History page) the entire contents of [[CZ:Donate]] and re-wrote it to include the same instructions as I posted in the two forum threads.
* I added a section on the live wiki "Welcome" page that is titled as '''''WE NEED SUPPORT FROM DONATIONS! PLEASE HELP!''''' and it includes a link to [[CZ:Donate]]  which now contains the instructions on how to make a donation.
* Dan and I had a phone conversation in which I gave him the passwords and other information needed for him to have access to both our PayPal account and to the Hotmail account where we receive notifications from PayPal when a donation is made.

If you wish to re-word the [[CZ:Donate]] article that I re-wrote, feel free to do so. And perhaps you should install your donate button there as long as you are sure it works and makes it simpler for the donors.  The manual instructions that I posted do seem to work, since we've actually had some donations.

If you also wish to re-write the section that I added to the Welcome page, again feel free to do so. I've done so much today that I am brain weary and you are better at these things than I am.

I also think it would be a good idea to create a banner at the top of each live wiki page (as was done for the Nominations and for the Election) that would ask for donations and would include a link to [[CZ:Donate]]. Would you please do that as soon as you can?

I will probably go to bed within about 2-3 hours from now. It is now almost 9:00 PM Pacific Standard Time and about 5:00 AM your time in the UK. Thanks in advance. [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 05:02, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

:Jess, it looks like Daniel Mietchen added the Donate button to the [[CZ:Donate]] article and it sure is simpler than the manual instruction I had first provided. So that is one less thing for you to do.  We now have $396 in our PayPal account.[[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 07:48, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Here's what I need to create a metadata form for, i.e. this page actually has content, I think:http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/The_Magician%E2%80%99s_Nephew

Thanks!

: Okay, I fixed it :) The problem was that you called the page [[The Magician’s Nephew]] but the metadata specified [[The Magician's Nephew]]. Can you see the difference? It's the apostrophe. One is a slightly slanted one and the other is straight: ’ ' --[[User:Jess Key|Jess Key]] 07:33, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

::That's been a problem that has arisen before, as I recall. It comes, I believe, from people writing text on their word processors, using Word, and then doing a Copy and Paste into CZ. The page http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Category:Subpages_Workgroup_Categories does not include the subgroups affiliated with the Engineering Workgroup.

Since the Chemical Engineering Subgroup and the Environmental Engineering Subgroup were the first two subgroups created by Chris Day, I don't understand why they are not included in http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Category:Subpages_Workgroup_Categories as being affiliated with the Engineering Workgrouo

Jess, you can avoid an "empty" green approval box by using

== Template issue? ==

It appears we have an inconsistency in the template {{tl|cite journal}}: if a ''url'' is included we obtain no quotes:

::{{cite journal |author=James A. Bierlein, Webster B. Kay |title=Phase-Equilibrium Properties of System Carbon Dioxide-Hydrogen Sulfide |journal=Ind. Eng. Chem. |volume=45 |issue= 3 |date=March, 1953 |pages=618–624 |doi=10.1021/ie50519a043 |url=http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ie50519a043}}
but when we have no ''url'', quotes appear:

::{{cite journal |author=James A. Bierlein, Webster B. Kay |title=Phase-Equilibrium Properties of System Carbon Dioxide-Hydrogen Sulfide |journal=Ind. Eng. Chem. |volume=45 |issue= 3 |date=March, 1953 |pages=618–624 |doi=10.1021/ie50519a043}}

[http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/policy/cit_format.html Medline] and the [http://www.umuc.edu/library/guides/apa.shtml#academicjournals American Psychological Association] don't use quotes.

[http://honolulu.hawaii.edu/legacylib/mlahcc.html Modern Language Association ] and [http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html The Chicago Manual of Style] do use quotes.

So I guess we go eeny-meeny and stick with one or the other? Or, we could disable ''url'' and insist upon only ''doi''? [[User:John R. Brews|John R. Brews]] 22:59, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

::That comes close to what we have, but it has ''no'' quotes around article titles and italicized volume numbers. Bold face for volume numbers is used by American Institute of Physics, but they never provide titles of articles. You can look at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources WP] to see a huge variety of methods, and WP says to writers to pick whatever style you like. WP {{tl|cite journal}} follows what you have implemented, and appears to me to be a hodge-podge endorsed by no-one. WP has a bunch of different templates, like {{tl|cite encyclopedia}} ''etc'' and they don't really care whether any of them follow an acknowledged standard.

::: Citing styles differ from publisher to publisher, journal to journal, field to field, author to author -- a matter of taste. The style should certainly be consistent on a page, but is it important to have a CZ style? And if so, which? Perhaps the EC (and the community) should discuss this, but there are many more important issues ... As long as the reflist template is used consistently style issues like bold face can be changed globally. --[[User:Peter Schmitt|Peter Schmitt]] 00:21, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to our newest Constable

Congratulations, Jess, on your well-earned and long overdue new position as Citizendium Constable. I have no doubt that Citizendium will be a better place with you watching over us. Thanks for accepting the challenge. D. Matt Innis 01:52, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

I heartily second that! What a relief to see that Ruth has removed my name from the Sysops and Linneas! Enjoy yourself! Hayford Peirce 02:10, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Pleased to stumble across this. Good luck, Jess. Ro Thorpe 11:19, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Jess, just finished a help article on how to archive user talk page

Please look at User:Milton Beychok/Sandbox where I have just finished a help page on how to archive subpages. I plan to upload it as CZ:Archiving user talk pages and you can then fit it into your new Help structure. I know that CZ:Talk Pages has a section devoted to the same subject ... but my stand-alone article is much more detailed and covers more aspects of the subject. I tried to write it so that newcomers could follow it step-by-step.

I would appreciate any comments or revisions you may want before I upload it. Thanks. Milton Beychok 06:56, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Milt, that looks great. I cannot think of any improvements.
It may be easier to move the page straight into the help system then going via a CZ page. If you could move it to Help:Index/Communication/Talk/Archiving that will put it straight in place. Also please add {{Help page|Talk Pages}} to the top of the page, and {{Back to help}} at the end of the page. Thanks for your help! --Jess Key 10:08, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Done. The Help:Index/Communication/Talk/Archiving is now in the Namespace (or should I say the Helpspace?). By the way, Hayford also reviewed it and had no changes to make. Milton Beychok 21:19, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Thats great! You can now access it by going to Help:Index then clicking 'Communication help', then 'Talk pages', then 'Archiving a talk page'. Thanks again for your help.
P.S. Technically it is the Help Namespace. --Jess Key 21:23, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Photo Attribution

This morning, after feeling so much better, I realized why I was doing this. Any work done for hire and any work paid for by the US Government, or by an employee of the US Government, is considered work for hire or public domain. See: http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.pdf Attribution automatically goes to the agency that paid for the work and since we all paid for the federal government photo it's considered public domain. That means the Mack article and the Osprey article were correctly attributed by me. It would be best to change the current attributions to the Harvard Press Office and US Government for those photos as they are now incorrect. It is nice to credit the photographer, if known, but the correct and presumably legal attribution goes to the agencies involved. I fulfilled my ethical and professional responsibility by notifying Citizendium of their error. Mary Ash 15:18, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Mary, if you will look closely at the photo of Mack that you uploaded, the photo itself has attribution to Harvard Press at the bottom (in very small print). As for the the V-22 Osprey photo you uploaded, the current credit line (which I added as required by CZ) has both the U.S. Navy (which is the government agency) and their photographer's name (who took the photo). So all is well. Thanks for your comment and concern. Milton Beychok 17:57, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
"Copyright protection under this title is not available for any work of the United States Government, but the United States Government is not precluded from receiving and holding copyrights transferred to it by assignment, bequest, or otherwise." (ref: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#105).
Therefore photos taken by non-government photographers but then given to the government ARE in fact copyrighted and are not public domain. Also, it is very possible that the copyright would be retained by the original photographer but the image licenced for use by the government. Therefore, unless we know for a FACT the exact copyright status of the image, it is best to attribute both the government agency and the photographer. --Jess Key 18:01, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Also...

106A. Rights of certain authors to attribution and integrity

(a) Rights of Attribution and Integrity. — Subject to section 107 and independent of the exclusive rights provided in section 106, the author of a work of visual art —

(1) shall have the right —

(A) to claim authorship of that work [...]

(e) Transfer and Waiver. — (1) The rights conferred by subsection (a) may not be transferred, but those rights may be waived if the author expressly agrees to such waiver in a written instrument signed by the author. Such instrument shall specifically identify the work, and uses of that work, to which the waiver applies, and the waiver shall apply only to the work and uses so identified.

Therefore even if the original author of the work did give the copyright to the government, they still have a legal right to be attributed to the image. Even if they sign a waiver the waiver only applies to certain usages, and therefore would not apply to our usage on CZ. --Jess Key 18:05, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
And I agree. The file history should reflect ownership is the US Government with credit given to the photographer. As written now the photographer is cited as the owner of the photo not the US Government which is incorrect. Mary Ash 18:11, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki?title=Image%3AOsprey.png&diff=100693841&oldid=100693698

Wrong. The photographer is cited as the AUTHOR of the photo, which is correct. The creditline (here) states that the copyright is held by both the photographer and the United States Navy. Unless we have proof that the copyright has been fully transferred, we must assume this is correct. --Jess Key 18:13, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Or here: http://en.citizendium.org/wiki?title=Image%3AMack_harvardpressoffice.jpg&diff=100697324&oldid=100697131 ...said Mary Ash (talk) (Please sign your talk page posts by simply adding four tildes, ~~~~.)
Also I have changed it from 'public domain' to 'copyrighted'. Unless we have proof that the photo has been released to the public domain we must assume that it has not. --Jess Key 18:15, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

{unindent} If you read the PDF copyright file I sent it says any work done for the federal government is considered public domain. The author/photographer was taking photos for the US government therefore is considered a federal employee making the photo public domain attributed to the US government. The way I attributed it originally is correct. Mary Ash 18:17, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

I did read it. If YOU read what I put above it says that "the United States Government is not precluded from receiving and holding copyrights transferred to it by assignment, bequest, or otherwise." Therefore the work MAY be copyrighted if it was not created by a government employee. Unless you can prove that it has been released to the public domain, we must assume it is copyrighted. --Jess Key 18:19, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
With regards to the John E. Mack photo, if you look at your original upload you can see that you have put a URL as both the author and the copyright holder. There is no way that a URL took the photo or holds the copyright. As the photographer is unknown, we have now put this. We can assume that the copyright is held by the Harvard University Press Office. Therefore with the corrections now made this is correct. --Jess Key 18:25, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
I forgot to add if it says U.S. Mary Ash 18:29, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Even if it is owned by the US government this does NOT mean that it is public domain. --Jess Key 18:39, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

--Jess Key 18:44, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

I wanted to email you privately but I can't find a "mail" logo to click on. I am not an attorney, therefore I can not offer you legal advice, but I do suggest you contact your site counsel for legal advice. I notified you of the potential inaccurate photo attributions as you are a listed admin. For your information, and to the best of my knowledge, if a photo says this:
Caption: Marine Corps Special Operations troops fast rope to a rooftop at Camp Lejeune, N.C., in May 2006, from a Block B MV-22B Osprey operated by Tiltrotor Test and Evaluation Squadron 22 (VMX-22). US Navy photo by James Darcy.

Date of Photo: 06 Aug 2010 Filename: 5-24-06 2nd fast rope 1 sm.jpg

http://www.navair.navy.mil/v22/index.cfm?fuseaction=gallery.viewPhoto&id=139
It means the US Navy i.e. the US Federal government owns copyright. You can contact the NAVAIR public affairs office to confirm photo status or you can consult with your attorney. As I wrote before, I thought of this situation this morning and contacted an admin. Mary Ash 19:40, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
If you wish to email a user you can click 'E-mail this user' at the end of the left side bar whilst visiting their talk page.
I think it is very important that I clarify something. I am not an administrator on Citizendium. You may have seen the word 'Administrator' under my name on the forum, this is because I have administrative permissions on the forums in order to perform certain technical functions.
If you wish to contact an official on the site, I would suggest either contacting Larry Sanger who is the Editor-in-Chief (sanger@citizendium.org), unless the matter refers to an issue with the behaviour of a Citizen. In the latter case you should contact the Constabulary (constables@citizendium.org). For a legal or copyright issue such as this the Editor-in-Chief is the correct person to email. --Jess Key 19:58, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Scientific and educational games

Hi Jess,

would you be interested in writing articles about such games, e.g. Foldit and The Number Race? I can provide input on the science behind them. --Daniel Mietchen 20:24, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

I'd add the question -- what about military training simulations, which often look like first-person or team shooter games?
Even more complex are the psychosocial dynamics of remote killing. Air Force officers variously go to the Officers' Club at a base in Nevada and play shooter games, or go to a different building and control armed drones in Afghanistan. They then go home for the evening.
Ender's Game, anyone? Except...Ender would have to know the Bugs were real. Howard C. Berkowitz 21:09, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
I'd be interested in writing articles on both types of game, and would certainly appreciate any collaboration you could provide. I'll try to start one over the next week. --Jess Key 08:10, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Green banner at top of Help articles

Jess: I think it would be very helpful if that green banner included links to Help:Index and to Help:Index/Map. Milton Beychok 21:19, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm thinking that we need to keep the green banner clear of clutter and taking up as little space as possible. I think it would be best if links to Help:Index were provided on the sidebar, the quick start page and in the welcome message sent to new users. Help:Index/Map is linked to from Help:Index. --Jess Key 08:22, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Since Mary Ash did not contact the real owner of the image after I gave her the contact email address I had managed to find, I contacted the real owner myself and got the information and permission that was needed. Jess, I have just written a new article and the title will be Smog when I upload it into the article namespace. It is currently in my sandbox at User:Milton Beychok/Sandbox.

I know that you are probably not an expert on the subject. However, I would very much appreciate your review of it and giving me any comments, additions, deletions, typo corrections, or revisions you care to offer on my sandbox talk page. I am fairly sure that there must be some parts which could be better written from the viewpoint of clarity and understanding.

Thanks in advance, Milton Beychok 02:13, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Jess, can you fix my goof?

Jess, I just revised and re-uploaded Image:Lightning over Oradea Romania 2.jpg so as to get the formatting into the current form with a credit line ... but it didn't work. Can you somehow revert my revision and go back to the the image format as it it was before I tried to fix it? I don't want to delete it because that might offend David Ellis who originally uploaded it from Commons.

Meanwhile, I am going to upload the latest version from Commons (which has a different name). Milton Beychok 19:32, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Why does test wiki announce that voting on the Charter starts on the 15th and the real wiki does not?

Is it true that we start voting on the 15th? If so, why isn't that announced on the real wiki as well as the test wiki? Milton Beychok 18:23, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

No. It is just a test of the announcement template, hence why it is on the test wiki. --Jess Key 20:55, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

What happened to the CZ Welcome page?

The Welcome page has a big white space in the left column (of the two column set-up) and the New Draft of the Week in the right column goes on and on and on ... way beyond what is ever has done before this.

Is someone playing around with it? Looking at the History doesn't seem to explain what happened. Milton Beychok 08:59, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

The reason: Editing the article changed the "NDotW"-markup. I added markup. To me, this proves that the page should not be transcluded. Instead an edited excerpt should be used. --Peter Schmitt 12:26, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Jess, what were the two other votes?

Hi, Jess: 65 yes, 5 no and 2 revise accounts for 72 of the 74 votes. Just to satisfy my curiosity, what were the other 2 votes? Milton Beychok 05:08, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

I see that too. I think it might be a typo. Russell D. Jones 13:00, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
I got it, in case you have seen it earlier, there were two votes at the bottom of the page that were not votes, but were test emails that were accidently counted with the "total" filter (removed the other filters) when counting the emails. I've fixed it on the banner and in the forum. D. Matt Innis 13:05, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

It happened again. I re-sent my nominations for the EC and again I failed to receive my copy. Is there something wrong with User:Editorial Council?? Milton Beychok 20:15, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Still no copy of my nominations for the Editorial Council. Have you checked User:Editorial Council?? Milton Beychok 23:15, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Milt, I just checked the email for User:Editorial Council and there is nothing from you in there. Please, try it again. D. Matt Innis 23:41, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Matt, I just tried a third time ... and it finally worked. What was the problem? Milton Beychok 00:11, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
I don't know for sure. Last night, Ruth had the same trouble with that account and I checked the preferences and the email feature was disabled. I checked it today when I saw this, but it was okay. Did you do it last night? D. Matt Innis 00:28, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

(unindent) Matt, my first two tries were last night. The third try was about 5:30 pm PST today. Milton Beychok 01:06, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Okay, then that's what it was. When I created the account, the default is supposed to be "Allow others to email me", but this account was set otherwise. I fixed it last night, but it must have been after you emailed the 2nd time and I didn't see this until this evening. All should be fine now. D. Matt Innis 01:19, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Formatting the four nomination lists in alphabetical order

Jess, some of the four lists are completely in alphabetical order and some are not. I think it only fair that they all be in alphabetic order. Can you please do that? Milton Beychok 04:40, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Done. Seems Matt hadn't noticed when he added in the new ones. --Jess Key 08:10, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Ah, of course, will do from now on! D. Matt Innis 11:19, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
Having two lists for EC would help to better see the status relative to Editors/non-Editors. --Peter Schmitt 11:54, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
Done D. Matt Innis 12:22, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Would like confirmation

Jess, I made two nominations for Managing Editor about 1-2 hours ago (Tuesday evening). Would you please confirm that my nominations were received. Thanks, Milton Beychok 01:46, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

You've been Nominated!

Someone has nominated you for a position in the new Citizendium. They have noticed you're dedication to the project and like what they see. To be listed on the ballot for the position, it is necessary that you accept the nomination on the [[Archive:Citizendium Ballot for the Management Council|Nomination page]. Just place accept next to your name along with the four tildes. The nomination period will close at midnight October 7 (UTC). Article 54 of the new charter details the requirements:

Article 54

  • In conjunction with the Declaration of the Editor-in-Chief regarding the effectivity of this Charter, there shall be a call for nominations for the following offices: Managament Council (five seats), Editorial Council (seven seats), Managing Editor (one), Ombudsman (one). This shall be the effective date of the Charter.
  • Any Citizen may nominate candidates for these positions.
  • Nominations shall be collected and collated by the Chief Constable.
  • Nominations shall be accepted no more than fourteen days after the effective date of the charter; the ballot shall be available starting on the twentieth day after the effective date of the charter; the election shall be completed no more than twenty-eight days after the effective date of the charter; all elected officials shall begin their term of office on the thirtieth day after the effective date of the charter.
  • Only candidates who accept their nomination shall be eligible to appear on the ballot. Nominated candidates can accept nominations for no more than two official functions. Accepting a nomination serves as a declaration of commitment, in the case of being elected, to fulfill this function until the limit of the term.
  • All positions shall be elected by a simple majority of the voting citizenry. In the case of a tie, an immediate run-off election shall be held.
  • In the event that a candidate has been elected for two functions, the candidate shall declare which one he or she accepts within three days of announcement of the election results. In the event that such a declaration has not been made during this period, the candidate shall be considered elected for the position for which the nomination was accepted first. The same procedure applies to a reserve member that becomes elected by a seat being vacated this way.

If you would like to make a statement to help voters, click the "Statement" link to the right of your name.

Thanks again for the commitment you're making to assure that Citizendium becomes the premier quality online source we all have envisioned.

About image permissions pages

Hi, Jess:

Please read the entire thread at http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php/topic,3424.0.html (a thread in the Technical Issues forum) and respond. Matt Innis, Peter Schmitt, Martin Baldwin-Edwards and myself are in agreement about the issue discussed there. Milton Beychok 23:19, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Formalia regarding writing help pages

Hi!

I have some knowledge of Latex, and would like to create the page Help:Formula. I just need to know if there is any formal requirement about writing a help page.

(edit) I see now that I forgot to ask you any question! My excuse is that it is late at night in Europe:

Would you please tell me if there is anything I need to know about writing a help page?

Thank you!

Johan A. Förberg 22:09; 12 October 2010 (UTC), 22:21, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Johan, I recently wrote three help articles that Jess liked. Perhaps, you might want to look at them:
You might also want to look at the detailed and comprehensive article (in my opinion) about LaTeX that we already have at Help:Displaying mathematical formulas. Milton Beychok 23:54, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Thank you Milton. I was led to believe that we had no such article by the redlink at General Help. I will now fix that link and try to add to the Displaying mathethematical forumlae article instead. Johan A. Förberg 09:15, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Need speedy deletion as soon as possible

I just tagged Image:Steam Cracker.jpg for speedy deletion. I had thought it was okay to use photos from www.scribed.com ... but decided recently that I had better check with Nova Chemicals. They responded and strongly opposed any permission. Would you please speedily delete that image? Thanks, Milton Beychok 19:51, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Going cold turkey

Hi, Jess, could you take a look at: http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Talk:Roast_turkey#What_do_we_do_now_with_the_turkey_recipes.3F__Asking_for_opinions_and_thoughts.... and offer your considered opinion when you have a moment? Many thanks! Hayford Peirce 22:07, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Please help me understand

Jess, a recent applicant for an editorship included in his application this BeenVerified hyper link: http://www.beenverified.com/users/434202772. When I go there, I am asked to log in in order to see that page. I don't understand why I must log in. I have never registered on that site so I cannot log in. Can you explain this? Milton Beychok 23:01, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure because I've never used the site either, but I think that when they log into their BeenVerified account there is a page marked 'Share' which they must fill in with an email address. This will send a link to that email address that can be viewed without logging in. Again, I'm not 100% sure on this as I haven't registered. the only way to know for sure is to try registering yourself and see how it works. You can start the process at https://www.beenverified.com/signup/new?p=citizendium

--Jess Key 02:20, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

As an experiment, I tried BeenVerified, but it seemed to be prompting me for its employer verification service and went into areas irrelevant to CZ. That led me to abandon the attempt. Unless Larry or others left a due diligence on why they selected BeenVerified, I'm not sure we should keep using it. On the other hand, the MC will need to take an overall, starting-from-zero-base, look at the registration process. Howard C. Berkowitz 02:42, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
That is pretty much the same conclusion that I came to ... namely I don't see why we should keep using it unless there is some simple way to verify that they have verified the applicant's real name. If they don't do that, then they are of no use to us.
I really don't want to register for something I don't understand. I'm already registered in too many places and most of them end up sending me tons of unsolicited advertisements. Milton Beychok 04:42, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

Technical staff

Hi Jess!

I got elected a reserve for the EC, and with all the council members currently well (fortunately!), I look for other ways to get involved more seriously with CZ. Do you need more people on the Technical Staff? What are, in your opinion, the prerequisites for working with the Technical Staff?

I have heard you comment several times on the downsides of using Simple Machines as the forum software for CZ. Perhaps it would be helpful to you if I scouted the different forum packages, looking for a solution with the least amount of transitional friction? Johan A. Förberg 11:54, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Lots of things come to mind, Johan. What about giving some thought to a redesign of the Welcome page, for instance? There is also CZ:Wishlist with some of the things that have been discussed in the past, yet not been acted upon. If you go for the forum software scouting, please also watch out for simple options to quote wiki talk. --Daniel Mietchen 13:58, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Johan, help on the technical work is always appreciated! I cannot really comment on the technical staff as such, as the MC has not yet decided how this shall be organised. However, not being officially technical staff does not prevent you from doing technical work. Indeed, doing technical work would most likely help you later acquire a position on the technical staff.
What you choose to do largely depends on your skill set. If you have skills in PHP and Postgres then you may be able to help with some coding work. If your skills lie in wiki-code then perhaps some work on the template systems, etc. would be suitable. You could also help find and test new extensions if there is a need. Here are some resources to get you started:
  • How to set up a CZ clone on Ubuntu - This guide will let you set up a clone on the CZ software. This would be a great first step if you plan on doing any coding or extension testing, and may be helpful in other areas also.
  • Bugzilla - This is a list of all open bugs on CZ at the moment. You may find something in there you could help fix.
  • The test wiki - This is a clone of CZ that is used for testing purposes.
You are more than welcome to scout out forum software, perhaps test some of it out. Try to work out what flaws there are in CZs forums and how these are remedied by the new software. Also bear in mind that our budget for forum software is almost certainly zero, so paid solutions would probably not be suitable. I have some ideas in mind myself, but a second pair of eyes on it would most definately be helpful.
Feel free to email me if you want using the 'e-mail this user' link on my user page. --Jess Key 14:34, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Daniel: Thank you, I'll have a look at those pages.
Jess: I speak HTML and CSS but unfortunately neither PHP nor SQL. I'm confident that I can learn in time, though. I'll have a look at the bugs and clone CZ on my computer and see if I understand the code. I'll also have a look at the forum software. Johan A. Förberg 19:26, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Created a CZ article about how to revise the license of an uploaded image

Jess, see CZ:Revising Image Licenses which I just wrote. You may want to incorporate it into your new Help material. Milton Beychok 06:32, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Jess: I know we have had some disagreements on the MC, but I still like you. (:>) ... and I really would like to hear from you about CZ:Revising Image Licenses.
Hi Milt, sorry I thought I had already replied. I like it a lot. If you agree that it is finished please move it to Help:Index/Uploading/Licence where it can be part of the help system. --Jess Key 04:58, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Governance Workgroup template

Your remark at CZ:Managing Editor/2010/1/Editors of their own user pages and subpages thereof fits squarely with what I have on my to do list: Having a variant of {{Workgroup}} for governance would be handy and perhaps provide an answer to the question of where to find such information if placed on a suitable set of pages. Can you set something up along these lines? I won't get to it anytime soon. --Daniel Mietchen 20:56, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm not going to be able to get to this any time soon either. I have a lot on my plate right now. --Jess Key 21:06, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Our Donation Drive

Jess, in about 30 minutes, I will be back to work with you on what we still need to do about our donation drive which I have already initiated in the main CZ Forums. Milton Beychok 01:55, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Updating you on our donations drive

Jess, we have now had 5 donations and the total in our PayPal account is at $372.

  • I have posted instructions on how to donate to the PayPal account in the "Governance" forum thread and the "Management and other non-content issues" forum thread.
  • I deleted (into the History page) the entire contents of CZ:Donate and re-wrote it to include the same instructions as I posted in the two forum threads.
  • I added a section on the live wiki "Welcome" page that is titled as WE NEED SUPPORT FROM DONATIONS! PLEASE HELP! and it includes a link to CZ:Donate which now contains the instructions on how to make a donation.
  • Dan and I had a phone conversation in which I gave him the passwords and other information needed for him to have access to both our PayPal account and to the Hotmail account where we receive notifications from PayPal when a donation is made.

If you wish to re-word the CZ:Donate article that I re-wrote, feel free to do so.

I also think it would be a good idea to create a banner at the top of each live wiki page (as was done for the Nominations and for the Election) that would ask for donations and would include a link to CZ:Donate. Would you please do that as soon as you can?

I will probably go to bed within about 2-3 hours from now. It is now almost 9:00 PM Pacific Standard Time and about 5:00 AM your time in the UK. Thanks in advance. Milton Beychok 05:02, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Jess, it looks like Daniel Mietchen added the Donate button to the CZ:Donate article and it sure is simpler than the manual instruction I had first provided. So that is one less thing for you to do. We now have $396 in our PayPal account.Milton Beychok 07:48, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Jess, I would like to change MediaWiki:Sitenotice

Jess, I would like to change the site notice to look like just below here. You have locked the source code, so I could not make changes. Would you please unlock the source code or make the changes as I have done here? Thanks, Milton Beychok 07:28, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

WE NEED SUPPORT FROM DONATIONS! PLEASE HELP!
We have an urgent need for funds to pay for hosting our servers.
Please make your donations here as soon as possible.
Milt, I have not locked the source code - however pages in the MediaWiki namespace cannot be edited by anyone who does not have the editinterface permission. Currently this is sysops. I have made the changes you requested. --Jess Key 21:38, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks,Jess. Is there a time log before the banners change on the main wiki pages? My pages still show the banner as it was. Milton Beychok 21:42, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
The banner tends to be more heavily cached than the rest of the wiki. Press CTRL+F5 to refresh your cache. --Jess Key 21:43, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Refreshing my cache a number of times did not work. Logged out and logged in again, also closed down the site and then started it again ... still no change in the banner. Has it changed on your screen? Milton Beychok 21:51, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it has. It may be a server caching issue. Let me know if it still hasn't changed tomorrow. --Jess Key 22:11, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
The new one currently appears on my screen even without refreshing my cache. Bruce M. Tindall 22:14, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

(unindent) Yup, now it has changed on my pages. Thanks again, Jess. Milton Beychok 22:26, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

How to create sticky topic on forums ?

Jess, I would like to create a "sticky topic" at the top of the "Management and other non-content issues" forum board which would be a posting with a running total of our total donations (which are still coming in) ... but only if I can access it to update it from time to time.

Is that possible? If so, can you tell me how to do that? Thanks, Milton Beychok 06:28, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

You don't have the power to make a topic 'sticky', however if you make the topic then I will make it sticky for you. You will be able to modify it later. --Jess Key 18:01, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
That's great. I'll post entitled "Total donations to date" in the "Management and other non-content issues" .... and that is the one I ask to be 'sticky'. Thanks, Milton Beychok 18:18, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
I have now made that posting and it is now ready to be made 'sticky'. Milton Beychok 19:19, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
Done. --Jess Key 23:30, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Problem with credit line of Image:Ionexchange.jpg

Jess, despite creating the credit line correctly (once by user K.H. Wong and twice by me), it does not seem to stick. The file summary still indicates that it should be created. Can you please see if you can fix it? Milton Beychok 21:21, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Help fix please Jess

Jess, I have messed up a metadata somewhere. I've got a cluster sans metadata, and a metadata pointing to a blank cluster.

I've no idea what I did.

Here's what I need to create a metadata form for, i.e. this page actually has content, I think:http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/The_Magician%E2%80%99s_Nephew

Thanks!

Okay, I fixed it :) The problem was that you called the page The Magician’s Nephew but the metadata specified The Magician's Nephew. Can you see the difference? It's the apostrophe. One is a slightly slanted one and the other is straight: ’ ' --Jess Key 07:33, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
That's been a problem that has arisen before, as I recall. It comes, I believe, from people writing text on their word processors, using Word, and then doing a Copy and Paste into CZ. Word's slanted ' remains like that and screws things up. Hayford Peirce 16:15, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes thats usually the case, or alternatively from copying and pasting from a web page. --Jess Key 16:23, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Why are subgroups affiliated with Engineering Workgroup not in http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Category:Subpages_Workgroup_Categories

Can you look into this, please? Milton Beychok 01:59, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

The Category:Engineering Affiliated Subgroups was created incorrectly. I have fixed it. --Jess Key 16:06, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Share button usage

Hi Jess, I was wondering whether you could update CZ:Statistics#Share button usage. Thanks. --Daniel Mietchen 02:09, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Green approval box

Jess, you can avoid an "empty" green approval box by using

 #ifexpr: {{PAGESINCAT:Articles to Approve}} > 0

--Peter Schmitt 01:32, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Peter, we tried that when it was first launched: http://en.citizendium.org/wiki?title=Template:Greenapprovalbar&action=edit&oldid=100672487
Unfortunately PAGESINCAT is not 100% accurate. This means that it often showed the wrong number, and therefore the green box appeared when it should not, or didn't appear when it should. For proof, the current value of PAGESINCAT:Articles to Approve is displayed after this sentence: 0
--Jess Key 06:37, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
I see. Could this be the size of the database (perhaps together with the complexity of the subpages template)? I only mentioned it because it works well on the EC wiki. --Peter Schmitt 09:33, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
I think the subpages template is the main culprit, but there have been other instances of it failing too. Unfortunately it is just not reliable. --Jess Key 16:26, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

About the MC motion re creating a list of passed MC motions on the live Wiki.

Hi, Jess:

Now that the MC has passed the subject motion (4 yes votes and 1 absentee), would you please put a link to that page in the "Management" section of the left-hand navigation column that appears on each CZ page? I suspect that the full title won't fit ... in which case, use "MC Passed Motions" for the link.

Thanks much, Milton Beychok 23:38, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

Well, if you're gonna do that, then you gotta do the same for the EC motions at http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Editorial_Council#Regulations_decided_upon_by_the_Council.2C_in_chronological_order -- or so I would say in my capacity as Secretary of the EC.... Hayford Peirce 23:42, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
Done and done. --Jess Key 06:17, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
Jess, thanks much. Milton Beychok 08:35, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
Yes, indeed, many thanks! Hayford Peirce 14:50, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Template issue?

It appears we have an inconsistency in the template {{cite journal}}: if a url is included we obtain no quotes:

James A. Bierlein, Webster B. Kay (March, 1953). "Phase-Equilibrium Properties of System Carbon Dioxide-Hydrogen Sulfide". Ind. Eng. Chem. 45 (3): 618–624. DOI:10.1021/ie50519a043. Research Blogging.

but when we have no url, quotes appear:

James A. Bierlein, Webster B. Kay (March, 1953). "Phase-Equilibrium Properties of System Carbon Dioxide-Hydrogen Sulfide". Ind. Eng. Chem. 45 (3): 618–624. DOI:10.1021/ie50519a043. Research Blogging.

Medline and the American Psychological Association don't use quotes.

Modern Language Association and The Chicago Manual of Style do use quotes.

So I guess we go eeny-meeny and stick with one or the other? Or, we could disable url and insist upon only doi? John R. Brews 22:59, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

I have inserted quotes for "url", too. --Peter Schmitt 23:15, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Peter: The APA version is
James A. Bierlein, Webster B. Kay (1953). Phase-Equilibrium Properties of System Carbon Dioxide-Hydrogen Sulfide. Industrial Engineering & Chemistry 45(3), 618-624. doi:10.1021/ie50519a043
That comes close to what we have, but it has no quotes around article titles and italicized volume numbers. Bold face for volume numbers is used by American Institute of Physics, but they never provide titles of articles. You can look at WP to see a huge variety of methods, and WP says to writers to pick whatever style you like. WP {{cite journal}} follows what you have implemented, and appears to me to be a hodge-podge endorsed by no-one. WP has a bunch of different templates, like {{cite encyclopedia}} etc and they don't really care whether any of them follow an acknowledged standard.
I'm inclined to let sleeping dogs lie, and go with what you have implemented. John R. Brews 00:03, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Citing styles differ from publisher to publisher, journal to journal, field to field, author to author -- a matter of taste. The style should certainly be consistent on a page, but is it important to have a CZ style? And if so, which? Perhaps the EC (and the community) should discuss this, but there are many more important issues ... As long as the reflist template is used consistently style issues like bold face can be changed globally. --Peter Schmitt 00:21, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Peter: Exactly so. I've adopted that view here. John R. Brews 01:59, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Welcome back!
