Seth, or Set, was originally the god of desert storms and the wind. He was always a dark and mood deity, but before he became god of chaos he was seen as a great ally of his brother and sister Osiris and Isis, as well as being the partner of his sister Nephthys.
Eventually Seth was seen as the god of evil and chaos. He was constantly at war with the "good" gods, in particular and Osiris and then his son Horus. Soon he became connected with the great serpent Apep. This serpent would attempt to stop the chariot of Ra from crossing the sky each day.
Seth was depicted as a pharaoh with the head of an unknown animal that resembles as a jackal. Sometime he was shown as man with red hair and eyes, and/or wearing a red mantle - this is because the Egyptians believed red to be the color of evil. At times he was shown as a black pig, hippopotamus or crocodile.
