By direct referencing, we mean that a reference has its own page here at Citizendium, e.g. at CZ:Ref:DOI:10.1016/0301-0082(89)90013-0 (to which CZ:Ref:Hofman 1989 On the evolution and geometry of the brain in mammals redirects). This way of referencing deviates from usual wiki habits (in which the same reference would be provided as a footnote[1] to the page that references it, see below) but is assumed to be more convenient for online reading.
