FC Schalke 04 (formally known as FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e.V., often abbreviated to Schalke 04 or S04) is a German association football club from Gelsenkirchen. Their first team compete in the top German football league, the Bundesliga (Federal League).
Schalke 04 are one of the most successful German football teams. They won the German football championship seven times, succeeded in the German cup final four times, and were winners of the UEFA Cup competition in 1997. The club was founded in 1904 by a handful of young men from Schalke, a quarter of the city of Gelsenkirchen. In August 2010, at more than 85,000 members it was the second biggest sports club in Germany.[1] The first team play their home matches in Veltins-Arena, a stadium in Gelsenkirchen opened in 2001 and taking 61,673 spectators in the Bundesliga.[2]
