Revision as of 03:53, 2 August 2007
I am a linguist specialising in acquisition of second language phonology and comprehension-based language learning. Following a BA in linguistics (Manchester) and an MA in language acquisition (Durham), I lectured part-time at the universities of York and Durham in the UK. Currently I teach linguistics and English at Mie University in Japan.

Constabulary
Since 1st August 2007 I have been a 'constable' on Citizendium - an administrator who helps out in cases such as behavioural disputes, pages to be deleted, and applications to be approved. To get help with these sorts of problems it is best to email constables@citizendium.org in the first instance, but where I am involved, feel free to contact me. I'm in Japan, so am more likely to be on-line between about 0200 and 0900 UTC (GMT), which is 2100-0400 EST.
Note that constables who are also significant contributors to an article can't intervene in a dispute about it, nor adjudicate in any case where they are personally involved, so for articles I've edited or discussed content, another constable is necessary.
Getting around and maintaining Citizendium
I make use of the workgroup boxes (see below) to navigate around Citizendium, as well as the links in the left menu. I recommend the 'toolbox', particularly 'Special Pages'. This brings you to a list of things in much need of maintenance, such as uncategorized pages. I've found that people creating inappropriate articles can get their work on the wiki for some time by not categorising articles so they don't show up in workgroup lists and other CZ groupings, such as 'internal articles'.
Citizendium contributions
- My recent Citizendium edits - look here to see what I've been working on (or just see if I know what I'm talking about). I am mostly responsible for the original information on many of the Linguistics Workgroup pages, and have also been trying to get linguists and departments to link to Linguistics.
- Linguistics articles I've created: the Syllable, Language acquisition, English language, the Comprehension approach (also created on Wikipedia), Sue Savage-Rumbaugh (sourced from Wikipedia, but much originally mine anyway), Contact language, Comparative linguistics, Japanese English (renamed and rewritten from the Wikipedia original), Romansh language, Grammar, Sign language, Creolistics and Martha Young-Scholten (the last two not found elsewhere). I've also rewritten the Linguistics template and created one for language acquisition.
- Other articles I've created: Grand Hotel (Scarborough) and Members' Lobby (both originally created on Wikipedia), Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling, Yorkshire, Giant Panda, People's Republic of China, Penguin, Red Dwarf (science fiction series), Chip (food), Chris Higgins, Reaction of penguins to aircraft and Penguins in the northern hemisphere (the last four not on Wikipedia). I also wrote the first versions of Penguins in popular culture and Penguin (word), which were moved from the Penguin article.
- Articles which I intend to make a significant contribution to include Linguistics, Language, Second language acquisition, Monitor Theory, the Critical Period Hypothesis, Applied linguistics, Phonology, Phonetics, Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Japan, Japanese language, Creole language and Singapore English. I rewrote the German language page, but don't intend to go back to it much.
- I'm also responsible for importing the England, Scarborough, York, Naples, Craig Charles, Norman Lovett, Danny John-Jules, red dwarf (star), Culture of Japan, Stephen Krashen, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, cargo cult, Reading and Doctor Who articles (the latter divided into both new and 'classic').
Workgroups I've contributed to
Workgroups are no longer used for group communications, but they still are used to group articles into fields of interest. Each article is assigned to 1-3 Workgroups via the article's Metadata. |
