USS Bainbridge (DDG-96)

Current operations

She was the first warship to come to the hijacked SS Maersk Alabama; United States Navy SEAL personnel aboard rescued the Maersk Alabama's captain, held hostage by pirates.

Technology

Bainbridge is the first Burke-class to receive the Remote Minehunting System, which uses an AN/WLD-1(V)1 to control an unmanned underwater vehicle. [1]

Lineage

She is named for Commodore William Bainbridge, [2] who, in 1800, commanded a U.S. squadron sent against pirates. His first assignment, however, was to buy off the pirates by presenting tribute to the Dey of Algiers. Subsequently, however, he fought pirates in the Mediterranean during the Barbary Wars.
