A member of the Democratic Party, he represents part of eastern Brooklyn and southwestern Queens in New York City. He was a corporate lawyer before serving in the[New York state assembly (57th district) from 2007 to 2012. Since 2019, he has been chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.
