The Continental Army was the American national army during the American Revolutionary War. The army was formed by the Second Continental Congress in June of 1775, under the command of George Washington. It comprised volunteers who were paid (often in arrears) by the national government. It fought alongside state troops and militia which were controlled and funded by the state governments. Following the war, most of the army was disbanded, and was replaced by the United States Army.
