Cyprus (Greek: Κύπρος, Kypros; Turkish: Kıbrıs) is an island in the eastern Mediterranean, formerly a British colony. Today it is divided into two political entites. The mainly Greek-speaking Republic of Cyprus is a member of the European Union with a wide, international recognition: it claims sovranty over the whole island but only controls the southern part. In the northern part, the mainly Turkish-speaking Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognised only by Turkey. The capital, Nicosia, is divided between both entities.
