Stavudine is a dideoxynucleoside analog (2',3'-Didehydro-3'-deoxythimidine) , antiviral drug that inhibits reverse transcriptase and is used to treat against HIV/AIDS sold under the brand name Zerit®. It is in the drug class nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). The phosphorylated form is the active compound that competes with deoxythimidine triphosphate (dTTP) for incorporation into the viral DNA and which acts as a DNA chain terminator once so incorporated due to the lack of a 3'-hydroxy group.
