U.S. Army Command and General Staff College
Located at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, home of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (USACGSC) is a midcareer professional school in military science. Midcareer roughly equates to the grade of major. It is accredited to grant Master of Military Art and Science (MMAS) degrees on completion of a thesis.
While most of its students are United States Army officers, a typical class will have officers from all the U.S. military services; civilians from organizations such as civilian members of the United States intelligence community, the United States Department of State, and civilian employees of the United States Department of Defense. There are often a few officers from friendly nations.
Not all students elect the degree option. They may transfer the work to a civilian college and obtain a degree there. Also, selected students are invited to attend a more advanced second term at the colocated School of Advanced Military Studies, which is more conducive to research work.
