Loosely, the predecessor to the U.S. Air Combat Command. It strictly focused on tactical combat aircraft and aircraft that directly supported them. Since air refueling was not considered part of tactical functions, tankers then belonged to Strategic Air Command.
In contrast, in the current structures, transport aircraft and tankers both belong to Air Mobility Command, and are distributed, as needed, among the Unified Combatant Commands.
