It formally split from the "mainstream" church in the 6th century, when the Patriarch of Alexandria was deposed by the Emperor, the Pope and the Patriarchs of Constantinople, Antioch and Jerusalem. The overwhelming majority of Egyptian Christians remained loyal to him.
