Cyprus (Greek: Κύπρος, Kypros; Turkish: Kıbrıs) is an island in the eastern Mediterranean, formerly a British colony. Today it is divided into two political entities. The mainly Greek-speaking Republic of Cyprus is a member of the European Union and has wide international recognition: it claims sovereignty over the whole island but only controls the southern part. In the north, the mainly Turkish-speaking Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognised only by Turkey, while the capital, Nicosia, is divided between both entities.
