Biography: Oscar Landerretche Gacitúa is an Economist with a degree from the University of Chile, a Magister in Economics from the University of Los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia, and a D.Phil (Ph.D.), in political economy, from the University of Oxford, England, UK. He was born in October the 18th 1949, and has one son (who is also an economist with a Ph.D. from MIT). He was appointed Undersecretary of State for the Economy in August 1996, by Eduardo Frei, President of the Republic of Chile, and was appointed Minister of Energy in November 1998, a post he held until the end of that administration (March 2000). He was the Director of Economic Affairs of Chile 21 Foundation (2000-2003), Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Public Enterprises National Agency (SEP)(2002-2003). Afterwards he was appointed Executive Vice President (CEO) of the Chilean Development Agency (CORFO) by the next President of the Republic of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, in March 2003. At the same time he was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Oil Company (ENAP), Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Standards Institute (INN) and member of the Antimonopoly Court (“Comisión Resolutiva Antimonopolios”). He was appointed Executive Vice President (CEO) of the National Mining Development Enterprise (ENAMI) by President Michelle Bachelet in March 2006, a post he left in March 2007. He was a full time lecturer and researcher in the Center for Development Studies (CEDE) and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Los Andes, Bogotá (1975-1976; 1983-1990) and and Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Chile (1991-2000). Since mid 2000, he has been Lecturer in Macroeconomics in the International MBA at Santa Maria University (a University specialized in engineering, management, economics and architecture), in Santiago de Chile, and was been appointed Director-General of the Santiago Campus of the Santa María University in June 2007.
