The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) is a Unified Combatant Command with geographic responsibility for countries in the Middle East and Southwest Asia. There are several exceptions:
- Middle Eastern countries that have coasts on the Mediterranean Sea are under United States European Command
- Countries in the Horn of Africa will be under the new United States African Command.
To avoid national sensitivities, CENTCOM headquarters are officially at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. A CENTCOM Forward headquarters, however, are in Camp As Sayliyah, Qatar.
Following the March 2008 resignation of Admiral William Fallon as commander of CENTCOM, General David Petraeus has been nominated as the new commander.
