Senator Hakeem S. Jeffries (New York) in 2013


Hakeem S. Jeffries (b. 1970) has been the U.S. congressional representative for New York's 8th congressional district since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he represents part of eastern Brooklyn and southwestern Queens in New York City. He was a corporate lawyer before serving in the New York State Assembly (57th district) from 2007 to 2012. Since 2019, he has been chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

On Jan. 3, 2023, Jeffries will be sworn in as leader of the Democratic Party caucus in the House of Representatives in 2023, replacing Nancy Pelosi. He will then be the House Minority Leader.
