The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) is a post-secondary education institution and statutory board under the purview of the Ministry of Education in Singapore.

Incident

ITE College West slashing case 2015

On 10 March 2015, at ITE College West, a 16 years old student namely Muhammad Zuhairie Adely Zulkifli, attacked another 19 years old student namely Ahmad Nurthaqif Sahed at the college's Piazza using a 35cm blade. The victim was sent to the National University Hospital for lacerations on his left arm and back.[1] He was hospitalised for two days and was given three months of medical leave.

Muhammad Zuhairie Adely fled after the attack, but was arrested later on the same day at his grandmother's house.

On 16 October 2015, Muhammad Zuhairie Adely pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing grievous hurt on 10 March 2015 at the ITE College West campus.

The attack reportedly sparked by a dispute over the victim's girlfriend. Muhammad Zuhairie Adely had obtained the knife from a member of the Rochor Way gang, and stored in the college's locker and retrieved it on the incident day.[2]

On 2 February 2016, a female ITE College West student told her friend, Muhammad Shaffil Mohd Nooh, that a male classmate namely Muhammad Fahmy Zuraimi (16 years old), had touched her buttocks the day before. Shaffil gather five other students in school to confront Fahmy. The group approached Fahmy on the next day in school and took him to a male toilet to question him about the alleged molest. The group was angered by Fahmy's arrogance and took turns punching and kicking him for about 10 minutes as he fell, and they left afterwards. Fahmy suffered a blood clot near his left eye from the attack. He later told his best friend Muhammad Hafiz Rosli (17 years old) about the attack. They decided to exact revenge on the group and Hafiz rounded up a gang of 12 to help avenge his friend.

On 4 February 2016, Fahmy and some of the students meet up with some of their rivals, and fight at a location nearby the ITE College West and a construction site.

As a result of the incident, 20 students were rounded up and arrested after the father of one of them called the police. Dr Goh Mong Song, principal of ITE College West, revealed in a statement that three of the students involved have since left the college. All students involved were charged in court, 18 students pleaded guilty and were given warnings and probationary sentences ranging from 15 to 24 months. The remaining two students, Muhammade Zuhairi Jumahat (17 years old), was convicted and sentenced on 24 October 2016. While the last person, Ridhaudin Ridhwan Bakri (22 years old), was pending a High Court trial for gang rape.[3]

On 8 February 2017 in ITE College East, a student beating up his schoolmate in the school toilet. The incident was video recorded and published online. The attacker was suspended by the school and the victim has consulted a doctor. The school also reportedly told the news media that it will cooperate with police investigation.[4]

ITE College Central murder

On 19 July 2018, a 56-year-old woman named Low Hwee Geok (刘惠玉 Líu Huìyù), also known as Michelle Low, was attacked and stabbed at the carpark area of ITE College Central. The attacker, who was Low's ex-husband Seet Cher Hng (薛泽元 Xuē Zéyuán), had attempted suicide after stabbing his ex-wife eight times, but he was taken to hospital by the police and he survived his wounds. The culprit was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment on 22 September 2021.

ITE lecturer sexual misconduct scandal 2019

On 25 October 2019, an ITE lecturer took upskirt photo of his female student when he was teaching a Life Skill class. The student spotted the lecturer positioning his phone camera lens towards her skirt. She immediately texted her family members and classmates, and her sister reported the matter to the police. The lecturer's phone was seized by the police and at least 133 upskirt images and 17 videos were extracted from it. The lecturer had also took an upskirt photo and video of an unidentified female victim in the school cafeteria on 5 Jun 2019, and an upskirt video of another victim at the school's general office on 29 Jul 2019. The lecturer was sentenced to four months of jail on 6 September 2022.[5]

ITE College West stabbing 2019

On 21 February 2019, at an overhead bridge along Bukit Batok Road, near the ITE College West, an 18-year-old ITE student, Tusheta Saravanan, splashed her green tea at a 17-year-old schoolmate, Logeswari Natarajah.

Tusheta was accompanied by two friends while Logeswari was accompanied by three. Neither parties knew each other. An argument started and ended when Logeswari left. Logeswari later returned to the overhead bridge with a cup of milo and splashed it on Tusheta's face, and Tusheta responded by stabbing Logeswari in the abdomen and slashing her left arm with a foldable knife. Tusheta reportedly picked up a golden pendant belonging to Logeswari after the fight, which she passed to her friend with the intention to sell it. Tusheta was later expelled from school after the incident, while Logeswari has recovered and returned to school.[6]

On 16 December 2019, Tusheta was sentenced to 21 months' probation for the attack. She was also ordered to perform 180 hours of community service, while her mother had to put up a bond of $5000 Singapore Dollars to ensure her good behaviour.[7]

Student trespassing into secondary school and assault

On 4 March 2020, an ITE student allegedly trespassed into a secondary school and beaten up a 17 year old teen due to jealousy over a girl. The victim had a nosebleed caused by the assault and was brought to Changi General Hospital for treatment, according to his guardian. The secondary school's principal told the media that the ITE student had lied about his reason for entering the school and attacked one of their students. The school had since made a police report, according to the principal.[8][9]

A video of a student bullying his schoolmate in ITE College Central school toilet was published on Instagram on 12 March 2021 and went viral. In the video, the bully taunted, slapped, and kicked the victim hard in the calf. ITE responded to the incident and suspended the schoolbully.[10]

Later on 17 March 2021, ITE announced it will expel the main aggressor and the other students involved in the incident will be counselled, and required to perform community service.[11]
