The first aircraft carrier to use nuclear propulsion, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is nearing the end of her service life, performing well in combat and teaching a great number of engineering lessons for new carrier designs. She carried on the distinguished name of the USS Enterprise (CV-6), the most decorated U.S. Navy ship of the Second World War.

Design and characteristics

In retrospect, the Enterpise may have been far too conservative in its power plant design, with eight reactors. Newer carriers usually have two.
