Brighton

Brighton is a town on the south coast of the United Kingdom, and forms with Hove the city of Brighton and Hove. It is part of the county of East Sussex - although close to the border with West Sussex - and has a population of around 480,000. It grew rapidly from 1841 with the arrival of the railway from London, which led to the building of hotels and the two piers, the West Pier and the Palace Pier.

Brighton is widely seen as a lively and liberal city with a large number of pubs and nightclubs, the Brighton Festival, and is also known as the "gay capital of Britain", with a large LGBT community. Business in Brighton is widely based on the creative industry, design, new media and technology. The main shopping areas in Brighton include the Churchill Square shopping centre and The Lanes, a set of streets filled with a large number of independent shops and restaurants.

Brighton is home to the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton, formerly Brighton Polytechnic. Brighton has a football team, Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club.

The fast service from London Victoria to Brighton takes 51 minutes, and Brighton has rail connections to Hastings, Gatwick Airport, Bedford and other destinations.
