Circular cruising formation [r]: Developed by Chester W. Nimitz, a naval tactical formation in which the high value units (e.g., aircraft carriers and amphibious warfare ships) are in the center of the formation, surrounded by concentric rings of escorts for anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and early warning (i.e., pickets)
