That happens a lot. Evolution, electric light and lots of other things were similarly invented/discovered more than once independently and roughly simultaneously. Makes you wonder whether tehre's something to the concept of "an idea whose time has come" (quotation that never was: it appears in a translation of Victor Hugo but not the original). And there's also the idea whose time hasn't come, like Leonardo da Vinci's invention of helicopters, submarines and tanks, and Mendel's work on genetics, ignored for decades before being independently and roughly simultaneously rediscovered three times, and Patrick Matthew's anticipation of eveolution in 1831.
