Controversy
Singapore Polytechnic stabbing 1990
On 22 November 1990, 20-year-old National Serviceman Lee Teck Sang, who deserted from his army and hid himself at the campus of Singapore Polytechnic (where Lee was an alumnus of the institution) for 17 days, used a knife to murder a 45-year-old lecturer during a robbery. The victim, Tan Chin Liong, died as a result of being stabbed thrice.
Student peeping girl in toilet 2022
On 23 February 2022, Singapore Polytechnic student Muhammad Danial Nordin, followed a girl into a school female toilet and used his mobile phone to peep at the girl by positioning his phone under the toilet cubicle door with its camera pointing at her. Danial left the toilet after a few seconds but the victim saw the tip of Danial's phone and heard someone leaving the toilet. The victim later sought help from the security staff and called the police. Danial was identified through closed-circuit television footage and was arrested.
Danial pleaded guilty to one count of voyeurism. Another count of criminal trespass was taken into consideration at the time. He was unrepresented at the court. According to Singapore Polytechnic, he was placed on a one-year suspension immediately after the incident.[1]
Student filming girl in toilet 2020
On 14 August 2019 at around 1.30 PM, Singapore Polytechnic student Chan Wei Lun (Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering student), used his mobile phone to record a video of a female schoolmate when she was inside a handicapped toilet on campus.[2] The victim saw the phone when Chan slipped it between the louvres of the toilet door. She opened the door and confronted Chan as he was walking away. An SP senior manager sent an e-mail to the police about the incident at around 2.15pm on the following day.
Chan pleaded guilty in court on 8 July 2020 to one count of insulting the woman's modesty. Deputy Public Prosecutor Kor Zhen Hong said that Chan had been "feeling stressed from school matters". The DPP also said that: "Moreover, the accused felt some curiosity towards videos containing sexual content, which had been posted in WhatsApp and Telegram chat groups... the accused had previously joined." This led Chan to decide to take a video of the victim while she was inside the handicapped toilet, added the DPP.
According to Singapore Polytechnic, Chan was suspended after the incident.[3]
