Talk:Refueling and Overhaul
current status as of Feb. 2011
I wrote most of the WP article "Refueling and Overhaul" myself, and I've transferred that part over here to CZ. I also inserted the 3 pics presently in the WP article, which are all U.S. Government PD, but I did not upload them to WikiCommons myself. I plan to upload these pics here myself for this article since they are government PD. I also plan to finish the "Refueling and Complex Overhaul" section myself some day, since that section was written by someone else in WP. Henry A. Padleckas 09:15, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
Relationship with SLEP?
I assume this is a superset of Service Life Extension Program, since that applies to non-nuclear ships, and I don't believe a CVN is refueled on every SLEP. That's a question, although it may not read as such. Howard C. Berkowitz 12:57, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
- Until you mentioned it, I have not specifically heard of the Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) for U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. Since I'm a nuclear plant engineer, my engineering work dealt with the U.S. Navy's nuclear-powered ships only, such as nuclear submarines and nuclear carriers USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and USS Nimitz-class carriers (CVN 68-CVN 77). These carriers underwent or will undergo Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding (usually) in addition to more minor repair/renovation periods called Planned Incremental Availabilities (PIA) at various shipyards. According to these two references:
- U. S. AIRCRAFT CARRIERS PARTICPATING IN SLEP, COH/RCOH AND PIA/DPIA (1980 TO 2007) pdf
- World Aircraft Carriers List: US Supercarriers
- SLEP was conducted on five non-nuclear carriers during the 1980s-90s all at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. By now, all those non-nuclear carriers are decommissioned. After reviewing these references, my conclusion is that RCOH or COH and SLEP are administratively considered separate things, although factually there may be many similarities. Henry A. WP import OK I think
My personal opinion is that this is acceptable as a WP import, since you wrote the original content, and have clear plans to improve it. That is especially credible since you've been contributing to related Naval articles. Howard C. Berkowitz 13:37, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
