Thunder Bay, Ontario is a port city on the north-east shore of Lake Superior.
It was formed in 1970 by the amalgamation of Fort William and Port Arthur.
Most Canadian grown grain is shipped, by rail, to Thunder Bay, where it is loaded into cargo vessels, and carried through the Saint Lawrence Seaway to its destination.
Thunder Bay is home to Lakehead University.
Geographically, most of the Northern Shore of Lake Superior is representative of the Canadian Shield, land with poor soil, and a shallow bedrock. There is, however, a small pocket of arable land in the Thunder Bay region.
