Currently Director of Educational Technology for the Bering Strait School District (BSSD) in Alaska. John is a former school principal, teacher and director of special education, and has a passion for helping teachers and school administrators with meaningful integration of technology into curriculum. For the last seven years John has been focused on working with the district's various departments to solve both instructional and management problems with Open Content, and Open Source tools. Among these is BSSD's Open Content Curriculum Project, a MediaWiki installation which allows teachers, students, administrators and outside visitors to collaborate in building Open Educational Resources (OER) to support learning. All of BSSD’s curriculum content output - including its podcasts, thematic, place-based education resources, and live event coverage - is Creative Commons licensed.
The Open Content Curriculum Project currently has over 10,500 pages of standards, documents, resource links, teacher-created lessons and student content contributions. In addition, John is the Project Manager and co-designer of DART, the district’s Open Source student information system.
John's educational background includes an M.Ed. degree in Special Education, another graduate program in School Administration, and he holds a bachelor's degrees in Political Science / Economics, and post-baccalaureate degree in Secondary Education. He is currently an adjunct faculty member in education for three regionally accredited universities, and teaches both on-line and face-to-face courses at the graduate level. He is particularly interested in how projects such as Citizendium, Curriki and others can be collaboratively created and utilized by K-12 users.
