JOHN F. VOTAW, Sr. is the Executive Director Emeritus, Cantigny First Division Foundation, Wheaton, Illinois. Lieutenant Colonel (U.S. Army, Retired) Votaw, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (1961), commanded U.S. Army cavalry and armored units through the battalion level and served in Vietnam in 1966-67. He retired from active duty in 1986. He completed graduate studies in history at the University of California, Davis (MA, 1969) and Temple University (Ph.D., 1991). He is currently Adjunct Associate Professor of History at Dominican University, River Forest, Illinois, where he offers courses in military history, and a Trustee of the Society for Military History. Dr. Votaw serves as an instructor for the Norwich University Master of Arts in Military History program in the university’s School of Graduate Studies (Virtual Campus). John and Joyce Votaw are the parents of four children and the grandparents of seven. They make their home in Wheaton, Illinois.
As Executive Director of the Cantigny First Division Foundation, Dr. Votaw directed the First Division Museum at Cantigny and the collocated Colonel Robert R. McCormick Research Center from 1986 to 2005. He was the general editor of the Cantigny Military History Series of books dealing with American military history and events related to the history of the 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. As the Historian for the Society of the First Infantry Division, Dr. Votaw supervised the publication of the Society’s newspaper, The Bridgehead Sentinel, and advised the historical activities of the Society. He retired from the Foundation at the end of 2005 and currently consults on military museum projects and occasionally writes for publication on military subjects. Dr. Votaw is the author of The American Expeditionary Forces in World War I (Osprey Publishing, 2005) and is writing a history of the First Division of the AEF in World War I for the University of Oklahoma Press.
