I was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1961.
I graduated fro Stanford University in 1989 with a PhD in Economics. I taught at Nova (Portugal), London Business School, London School of Economics, Berkeley, and am currently Professor of Economics and Research Professor, Department of Economics, Leonard Stern School of Business, New York University.
My research interests are centered on the study of firms, markets and competition -- what economists refer to as industrial organization. I am the author of the textbook, Introduction to Industrial Organization, published by MIT Press and translated into seven languages.
I am Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research. I served as General Editor of the Journal of Industrial Economics from 1999-2003 and am currently co-editor of the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy. I have consulted with various firms and government organizations, and am currently Chief Economic Consultant at the Portuguese Competition Authority.
Other than economics, my interests include painting (my art work has been exhibited on both sides of the Atlantic) and saxophone playing (I have performed with the NYU Stern Faculty All Stars and other equally reputed bands).
