My first jobs after college included working as a waiter, a stock handler in a department store, a driver in a political campaign, a research assistant/aide for a state legislature, and then a brief stint as a computer programmer for that state legislature--writing in RPG II--an ancient derivative of COBOL. I've worked in a university environment since 1978: first, like so many other graduate students, as an "academic sharecropper," teaching 6-11 hours a semester whilst taking courses; then, since 1983, as a technical writer and user support staff member in a university computing center. My research interests are in intellectual property and computer security--specifically, how ISPs, schools, universities and colleges, governmental agencies, etc. can help users learn and practice responsible behavior. In my spare time, I teach university classes in computing ethics and intellectual property, play old-time country music, referee youth and scholastic soccer matches, and teach Sunday school at a liberal parish church. Other interests include coaching soccer (I took a team from the United States to Denmark summer 2004), journalism (I wrote a technology column for a local paper [1997-99]), all sports, all music, the original radio shows for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, American and European history, and the St. Louis Baseball Cardinals.
