Steve Murphy was given a book titled "What is Sound?" when he was six years old, and he is still asking that question.

In 1978 Steve entered the (then) Australian Film and Television School and had the best education in sound anyone could have hoped for. After graduating, he worked on commercials, corporates and short films, then moved on to telemovies, mini-series and feature films. He has recorded production sound and has also worked in post-production, both as a sound editor and mixer.

Along the way he began teaching others about the art and craft of film sound. From 1988 to 1995 he was Head of Sound at the Australian Film Television and Radio School, and is proud of the success his students have achieved since graduating.

After his time at AFTRS, Steve returned to freelance life, continuing to record, edit and mix sound for film and television productions of all formats and genres. For 16 years Steve also worked for Dolby Laboratories as a sound consultant, based in Australia.

Steve has returned to teaching, and now works for TAFE NSW in Sydney. Steve is currently undertaking doctoral studies at the University of Technology, Sydney, researching professional identity among film and television educators.
