Images
Bill, do you know how to download images to CZ, assuming that we can do so without violating copyright? My scheme -- which I'm going to ask other people about first -- is to scan in the covers of some manga (which typically are not protected by copyright) and include them in the manga article. That article, BTW, is now much closer to being finished, on User:Timothy Perper/SandboxHistManga -- so if you'd like to read it and comment, that'd be most welcome. Thanks. Next! Anime
Take a look at anime. I rewrote it, and if you think the rewrite is poverty-stricken, take a look at what it replaced. So we can rewrite anime also, with a fundamentally different structure than the manga article, this time stressing themes and interpretations and centering on discussing anime genres, aesthetics, and stylistics rather than its history. - Hmmm . . . So just what is anime? As the word is used in America it designates post-WWII Japanese animation existing in symbiosis with manga. That is to say, it does not extend to the whole of Japanese animation. The Wikipedia article suggests that the Japanese use the word to refer to all of animation, where ever and whenever. The Wikipedia article covers, more or less, all of Japanese animation. What's even more confusing is that, so says Wiki (referencing Fred Patton), the Japanese now use the term Japanimation to refer exclusively to Japanese animation (but not necessarily to the manga-related subset of Japanese animation). So just what is this article to be about? --William L. Benzon 14:24, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
- Who knows? It'll be about anything we want it to be about, provided we talk about animation from Japan. My idea was to give a brief -- very brief -- history and then plunge into genres and stuff, describing different kinds of modern anime, talking about major directors and less well known directors, talk about superflat, talk about anything we like, provided it has something to do with anime.
- Definitions:
- Japanese word for cartoon and animation. In Japan, "anime" refers to any and all animation or cartoon - regardless of the genre, style, or nation of origin. Outside of Japan the word "anime" has come to refer specifically to animation of Japanese origins, or animation of a particular style (see below). Because of this, it is pronounced the Japanese way: "a-nee-may".
- Japanimation, from http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/lexicon.php?id=46
- A North American amalgamation of the words "Japan" and "animation" used to refer to Japanese Animation. Japanimation was, for a while, the common way to refer to Japanese animation before "Anime" became the preferred word.
- Since then the word "Japanimation" has fallen in stature and many North American Anime fans sneer upon its use as bastardization.
- Paradoxically enough, "Japanimation" is now commonly used in Japan to differentiate between Japanese animation and other animation, all of which is called "Animé."
- ANN is right -- anime is the term used in the US. I'll have to check their Patten reference.
- So it's wide open.
