Watercress is the common name of the perennial, semi-aquatic herbs Nasturtium officinale and N. microphyllum. Both are native to Europe, but are also grown in Asia, North America and northern Africa.

Watercress is cultivated in wet to aquatic soils. It is essential that the water be clean when it is cultivated for human consumption, as it is very sensitive to pollution and can easily pass on contaminants when it is eaten. It is hardy down to about 5° F, but will cease growing during cold winter weather.

The leaves have a peppery taste, and are used in salads and sandwiches, as well as a garnish.
